Recently grapefuit is my thing. It's my salvation in March. The sweet, tart tangy flavor - for breakfast, snacks and dessert so why not cocktail hour as well?

March in New England is notoriously dreadful, and while almost over - and April has a breath of warmer weather that comes in, as well as blooms starting to come out March is still terrible. I forget about Grapefruit during other parts of the year. That's what's so great about seasonal produce and drinks, the seasonality of them! These days, you can get pretty good grapefruit juice anywhere, and it's not some tart grossness it's fresh pressed. Thank you juice craze.

On top of grapefruit, I've been thinking about Vodka lately. Not in the alcoholic craving it kind of way, but in the ... "poor vodka" kind of thing. It seems to have been left behind in the general "craft cocktail" phase we are going through. BUT don't be fooled by all the rye and whiskey drinks, the botanical gins and herbal elixers (let's not kid ourselves I still love them), but there are some amazing craft distillers out there. Bully Boy is one, and a local vodka. There are tons of different great vodkas out there, I just always get caught up in my wine buying at the store I don't have any hands left for another bottle. Every-time I go to the liquor store, I get a few wines, maybe a new liqueur or shrub, but it's always a chore. Today, I no longer worry about that.

Welcome, Drizly into my life. Yeah, the deliver service. I'm their new biggest fan. Why? Because they work with local retailers, and in my case, my favorite local liquor store. I can jump right onto their website and Bottles Providence can be at my apartment in an hour with a case of whatever. It's pure genius this delivery thing. I love that I'm already familiar with the inventory at Bottles, and they have delivery, but for us visual people - it's easier to jump online. Plus, think about it. Planning a dinner party and you don't want to carry that case of wine from the parking lot, into the key fob'ed building wait for the elevator, find the keys ugh. I'm so lazy, so this is well going to keep my bar stocked! Thank you Drizly!

Also noted, it's actually  a same day (if schedule allows) delivery service IN RHODE ISLAND. We were the last to get Chick'filA (not that this vegetarian cares) aka: like last month, as well as the last to get a Chipotle... so I'm glad we are picking up fast on this trend!

I developed this cocktail when I was thinking about grapefruit juice and how much I love it. But it lacks the herbal complexity that I tend to like, as well as sometimes needing some sugar. So this SAGE infused version of a classic Greyhound is sure to take the almost spring, blues away. (yeah, I know it's technically Spring, but doesn't feel like it).

You will want to brew up a batch of this Sage simple syrup before you get started!

Sage Greyhound Cocktail

Makes One Cocktail

Ingredients

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a tumbler add your simple syrup, grapefruit juice and vodka over ice. Shake, shake shake!
  2. Pour into a glass over ice.
  3. For a twist on this classic cocktail add a salted rim and you'll get a Sage Salty Dog (salty greyhound lol).
  4. Note: For those making the simple syrup same day, just make sure it's room temp before adding to your cocktail so that it doesn't heat up your drink too much. If making in small batches - a little time in the freezer will do the trick!
